EXPERIMENTING WITH THREE ACTS: reading Han Kang and Lisa Halliday
with Monika Woods
Meets biweekly, Feb 2 - Mar 30, 2025 | Sundays, 7:30-9:30pm ET (on Zoom)
$700 | REGISTER
This workshop focuses on non-traditional applications of the three-act structure. We’ll read Han Kang’s The Vegetarian and Lisa Halliday’s Asymmetry as a jumping off point to discuss the ways authors can play with the classic idea of plot—rising action, climax, and falling action—to create something familiar and story-driven while experimenting with form at the same time.
The class will workshop a piece of writing by each student through this lens, and each student will receive an hour-long one-on-one with the instructor. Students will need to purchase or borrow copies of The Vegetarian by Han Kang and Asymmetry by Lisa Halliday.

"Monika Woods is as much of a genius in her writing as in her editing. She has a way of seeing huge potential in an unfinished manuscript and finding just the right bit of insight to make everything snap together. When I was ready to submit my book to publishers, she held my hand the entire way, pitching the book in a compelling and accurate way and offering insight into publishers’ comments."
